Thinning Hair: What Salon Scalp Serums and Lotions Can (and Can't) Do

Cutrin Bio+ Strengthening Scalp Serum for Women on a marble surface

Thinning hair is one of the most common worries we hear about at our salon in Helsinki, from both women and men. The shelves are full of serums and lotions promising stronger, fuller hair. Here is an honest look at the ones we keep at Happy Oskar, photographed by us (backgrounds styled).

Important: these are cosmetic products. Hair loss can have medical causes, such as hormones, iron deficiency, thyroid problems, stress or genetics. If your hair is falling out suddenly, in patches, or you are worried, see a doctor first. Read How We Research.

What cosmetic scalp products can realistically do

  • Keep the scalp clean, comfortable and in good condition.
  • Make existing hair look fuller and feel stronger.
  • Give you a routine you can stick to.

What they cannot do

  • They are not medicines, and they are not a substitute for medical treatment of hair loss.
  • Claims on packaging, such as "stimulates hair growth", are the manufacturer's claims. Results vary a lot between people, and any change takes months, not weeks.

The products on our shelf

System 4 Bio Botanical Vital Cure

From the Finnish brand System 4 by Sim Sensitive. The box says it is for thinning hair and that it "stimulates scalp blood circulation". It is a leave-on scalp treatment and is perfume free.

Keune 1922 Fortifying Shampoo bottle
From our shelf at Happy Oskar, Helsinki. Our own product photo, background styled.

From Keune's men's line, Distilled for Men. The lotion box says it "stimulates hair growth". The shampoo label says it "builds strength and fullness", and the bottle lists creatine, vitamin H (biotin), red ginseng, provitamin B5 and eucalyptus among its ingredients. Using a shampoo and leave-on lotion from the same line is a simple routine.

How to get the most from a scalp treatment

  1. Apply to a clean scalp, parting the hair in sections.
  2. Massage gently with your fingertips.
  3. Use it consistently for the period the brand recommends before judging results.
  4. Take a photo of your parting or hairline in the same light every month so you can compare honestly.

When to see a doctor

Book an appointment if hair loss is sudden, patchy, comes with an itchy or painful scalp, or appears together with other symptoms such as tiredness. Blood tests can reveal treatable causes.

For dry or flaky scalp, read our winter scalp care guide.

Where to shop

For gentle scalp care shampoos and scalp brushes, YesStyle carries many Korean and Japanese options. Cosmetic products do not treat hair loss; see a doctor for persistent shedding.
