Lips are one of the first places to suffer in a cold European winter. They have a very thin outer layer and no oil glands of their own, so freezing wind and dry indoor air hit them hard. Here is how to keep them comfortable.
This guide is general information, not medical advice. Read How We Research.
Why lips crack in winter
- Cold, dry air pulls moisture from the lips.
- Licking your lips feels soothing for a second, but saliva evaporates quickly and leaves lips drier.
- Wind and sun reflected from snow add to the damage.
- Some ingredients, such as strong fragrance, menthol or camphor, can irritate already sore lips.
What to look for in a lip balm
| Look for | Why |
|---|---|
| Petrolatum, shea butter, beeswax, lanolin | Form a protective seal that slows moisture loss |
| Panthenol, ceramides | Help soothe and support damaged lips |
| SPF, for daytime outdoors | Snow reflects UV, even in winter |
| Fragrance-free | Less likely to irritate cracked lips |
Ingredients that tingle or cool, such as menthol, camphor or strong flavours, can feel nice but may irritate lips that are already cracked.
Popular types of lip care
- Simple ointment balms based on petrolatum: very protective and usually inexpensive. Good for night and outdoors.
- Repairing balms with panthenol, such as pharmacy lip balms from dermatological brands: good for sore, chapped lips.
- Overnight lip masks: thick, cushiony textures used before bed. A popular small gift.
- Daytime balms with SPF: useful for skiing, long walks and bright snowy days.
A simple routine
- Apply balm in the morning and reapply often during the day, especially before going outside.
- Put on a thick layer before bed.
- Do not peel flakes. If you want to smooth lips, use a balm and let flakes come off on their own.
- Drink enough water and use a humidifier if indoor air is very dry.
